To those who follow me….

All medical questions are welcome. I will do my best to answer them with the latest greatest info, but DISCLAIMER- don’t sue me. If the problem affects you please contact your general practitioner and if this is an emergency- CALL 911.

So first order of business

1. Residents do not sleep with their attendings. ( unlike Grey’s Anatomy)

Definitions:

Intern- usually a first year resident ( PGY-1= post graduate year one) that is transitioning to something else. EX dermatology does an intern year

Resident- A general term for a MD that has graduated med school but has not finished training/ BOARD certification in his specialty. I am a first year resident in pathology. # of years of residency varies according to specialty. Mine is 4, family medicine is 3, etc

Fellow- after residency, it is an elective year in a field of specialty. Ex after pathology I want to do a fellowship in dermatopathology. Some fellowships require an additional test to get certified.

Attending- this is a board certified MD in a specialty. These a MD’s in a teaching facility.
